The Top 10 Flying Comforts

Long distance travel used to be a luxury. Today, particularly if one is flying, it is something that many of us face with dread. We can't avoid crowds, long waits, indecipherable public address systems, and missing luggage, but some advance planning and judicious carry-on packing can ease the stress. You may have your own favorites, but here are some suggestions:

1. Bottled water

Dehydration in the dry air of the aircraft cabin can cause you to feel terrible both inside and out.

2. Lip salve and skin moisturizer

Again, protection against heat and dry air.

3. Request a special meal.

Most airlines will provide special meals on request, given sufficient advance notice. Ask what your options are. Advantages include better quality food, you will probably be served first, and they will not run out of whatever your preference is before they get to you.

4. Neck pillow

If carry-on space is at a premium, inflatable neck pillows are on the market.

5. Cleansers for face and hands

Feeling fresh and avoiding the grunge factor can do a lot for how you experience your trip.

6. Writing materials

Catching up on personal correspondence and recording brilliant insights can help you to feel that you are not wasting your time.

7. Both light and serious reading matter

Most of us start out saying that we will catch up on our reading on the flight. Under some circumstances you may not be able to concentrate on something heavy, but a good novel may even be able to distract you from annoying surroundings.

8. Something to eat

Reports of hours spent on the runway without food are becoming more common, and so-called light meals are getting lighter. Having some fruit, and/or power bars to turn to may help keep your internal equilibrium.

9. Loose, layered clothing

Arriving with a smile on your face and feeling comfortable is more important that arriving in an impeccable suit that has not allowed you to relax during the entire trip.

10. Your sense of humor

The necessary antidote to *air-rage.* It really does help.
