The Top 10 Ideas to Help Us Live more Lightly on our Mother EarthCategory: Consumer, Buying, Purchasing, Suggestions (BU13)Originally Submitted on 8/24/97. Most of us mean well where environmental issues are concerned. Not all of us act well. Remember that it is our grandchildren, or our friends' grandchildren, who will inherit the earth we leave them. 1. Water is precious. When brushing teeth, shaving, cleaning vegetables, turn on the water only when you need it, don't leave it running. Investigate ways to flush less water down the toilet. 2. Take reusable shopping bags with you to the grocery and other stores. When you do get plastic bags, reuse them instead of buying trash bags, or recycle them. 3. Keep a current list of your legislators near where you write letters, keep informed on environmental issues, let your legislators know how you feel about proposed legislation. 4. Use environmentally friendly cleaners such as baking soda and vinegar for many cleaning tasks instead of brand name chemicals. 5. Learn to enjoy weeds, a multi-colored lawn. Whatever poison you use on weeds and insects will remain poisonous long after these minor irritations have died. 6. Plan your shopping and other trips to keep gasoline use to a minimum. Carpool. Bike or walk when possible. 7. Read your locality's recycling information. Recycle everything they will take. Consider what can be re-used by you or others. 8. Keep your discardable trash to a minimum, and carry it home. 9. Eat as low on the food-chain as possible. 10. When you see people littering, wasting, disrespecting our Mother Earth, voice your opinions (when it would be safe to do so). Maybe they never thought about their grandchildren having to inherit their trash.
