Distinction: Healed Vs. Healing

Category: Shifts to Make, Changing Behavior (BT100)

Originally Submitted on 5/3/97.

Definitions

Healed - having become healthy

Healing - in the process of becoming healthy

Comparisons

closure vs. ongoing

Example

Louise stated that she was healed of the trauma of having an extremely critical mother. She no longer saw herself as damaged goods or used her past to justify her current behavior. Mary felt she was still healing the wound of having an absentee father. She felt she continued to be affected by that experience.

Key Point

At some point, a person states that they are fully healed, even though they may have scar tissue or continue to experience ups and downs. Some people get caught in the drama of forever healing.

Benefits

If you are healing, decide on an end point to that process.
