Coaching Tip: Does your use of time reflect your priorities?

Introduction

It is too easy to get into the habit of allocating our time in a certain way, so that we continue to make that allocation after our priorities have changed. Depending on the rate of change in one's life, it is wise to re-evaluate our priorities on a regular basis, possibly monthly when we are experiencing rapid change, certainly annually for all of us.

The Coaching Tip

Then the trick is to examine our use of expendable time in light of those priorities. (By expendable time I mean the time for which we have any options. We MUST spend a certain amount of time eating, sleeping, and doing whatever we do to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads. Beyond that we have expendable time, the time that offers us choices.) We do not HAVE to spend many, many hours preparing our food, watching TV, or playing computer games. If we do, then we are making choices that do not reflect what we say are our choices as regards priorities.

If we choose to spend great amounts of time on things that are low on our list of priorities, then a re-allocation of time is the only way that we will achieve our most important goals. If we do not do that, then this, too, is a choice, a choice that reflects where our true priorities lie.
