Coaching Tip: Coaching or Therapy?
Category: Coaching Secrets (CS198)

Introduction
The fact that a client has identified the causes of his/her problems does not mean that the problems are fixed. Insight is only a first step.
The Coaching Tip
If the causes are comparatively superficial, then the client can be encouraged to use that insight to move forward. This is appropriate coaching. If the causes are long-standing, deep and traumatic, then therapy may be needed before the client is able to move forward behaviorally. This is the time to make a referral rather than attempt to continue coaching a client who is making little or no progress. We do not well serve a client who needs something that we are not trained or qualified to provide.Whether or not a client is capable of moving beyond the insight into the process of making changes is crucial to identifying who is likely to benefit from coaching, and who should, in all probability, be referred to a therapist.
