Coaching Tip: Focusing on the Next Step

Introduction

Often, clients have a large number of long-term goals in
mind when they hire a coach. Their difficulty is that
before they can begin to move forward towards them,
they need to clarify which ones are the most important,
AND, what is the first step for each.

The Coaching Tip

The idea of having many goals and projects can be
overwhelming. The thought of having to clarify, prioritize
and organize all of them often leads to what I call "the
three Ps of non-action" - panic, procrastination, and
paralysis.

Clients can be tremendously relieved when they realize
that they do not need to keep ALL of every project in
mind ALL of the time. If they can first be clear about
what is involved in each project separately, they can then
put many of them on the back burner and focus only on
whatever is the next step for each project. The other
details can often remain back burnered until, each in
turn, they, too, become the next step.
