Coaching Tip: Is your environment 'coachly'?

Introduction

It is a joke among coaches who coach by phone that one of the wonderful things about the profession is that we can coach while wearing sweatpants or shorts, without having to worry about corporate dressing or conveying the right image. However, whatever the environment we create to take our calls, WE know what it is, and it cannot help but affect us.

The Coaching Tip

We know that our environment needs to be immaculate - that is part of what Clean Sweep and Personal Foundation are about. But do we remember to prepare for each call so as to put us in the right frame of mind for the client who is about to call? It may be just one call out of twenty during the week for a busy coach, but it is THE one and only coaching call of the week for the client, and s/he deserves that we be prepared.

Telephone sales folks know the recommendation that they keep a mirror in front of them when they are selling, and that they remember to smile. Coaches may not need a mirror to remind us to smile, but it is wise to set the mood. Tidy the desk. Set the atmosphere. If you are a candles person, light a candle. Pause before the phone rings and focus on that client.

Then, when the phone rings, both you and your client will know that you are completely present and fully focused on your client, and only your client.
