Coaching Tip: Move forward, not backCategory: Coaching Secrets (CS215)Originally Submitted on 3/1/2000. IntroductionPeople often hire a coach during a time of transition. The coach who believes s/he has been hired to help the client move forward into the future, needs to be aware that sometimes the client actually wants to recreate the past. The Coaching TipClients who have not fully worked through their feelings about past events may not be as fully committed to moving forward as they believe. Sometimes the future that they envisage is actually a recreation of the past. If this is truly the client's choice, then there may be no harm in it. Sometimes you can go home again. However, if the direction is unconscious, so that the client believes s/he is really moving forward toward a new and different future but is not, then it is important that the coach clarify what seems to be happening.
