Coaching Tip: Display Your Achievements.

Introduction

Coaches often need to encourage their clients to think positively about themselves and not to under-estimate their abilities. One way to do this is to suggest that they create a display of their past successes.

The Coaching Tip

A 'success notice-board' can be created to carry symbols of past successes. Not only is this a boost to self-esteem, but it may also be a challenge to motivate future projects. Of course, some successes are not themselves appropriate for display, either on a notice board or on shelves. In these cases, clients (and coaches) can be encouraged to create 'headlines' announcing their successes, such as might have headed an article about their success in a newspaper or company newsletter.

At first, many people may resist the idea of creating these headlines. They may feel it is not appropriate to 'toot their own horn.' They may say that they have never achieved anything. These are precisely the folks who most need to learn to speak up for themselves, and to appreciate their own abilities, so that they have the courage to move on and achieve yet more. A coach can help them to look at themselves and discover that, indeed, they have past achievements. As they write their 'headlines' they can come to see their achievements for what they truly are, and be proud of them, and of themselves.

Whether an achievement is a photo of a child, a role in a high school play, a career success, the conquering of a disability, a resolution kept, or a negative habit overcome, all are achievements worthy of preservation and appreciate on a success notice-board.
