Coaching Tip: Delegate for results, not for process.

Introduction

A coach will sometimes find that a client presents as having to take responsibility for everything around her/him, when in fact there are other resources who can carry some of the load.

The Coaching Tip

It is not unusual for someone to claim that they need to do everything in terms of family or work responsibilities, when in fact they unintentionally discourage others from helping them. If they are able to both ask for help, and encourage it when given, then they may find that they not only have more time for their own activities, but that those around them are growing and blossoming with the extra responsibility.

One subtle form of discouragement is to expect that anyone who takes over a task from us must do it in the same way that we did it. By gentle probing, a coach may be able to discover whether a client has been discouraging others from helping just because their way of doing the job was 'not right' - meaning 'not exactly the way I do it.' This is a form of perfectionism that gets in the way of delegation, and prevents others from growing.

If the focus is placed on the end result, not on the process, the client may find it easier to let others grow into the task while at the same time freeing up him/herself to focus on other things.
