Coaching Tip: Working Hard on Working Hard

Introduction

More activity does not always achieve more results. Sometimes more activity simply means that we are working harder and harder and believing that what we are doing will bring results, when in fact our activity is not results-oriented.

The Coaching Tip

For folks who tend toward perfectionism, particularly, this can be a trap. Certainly we all need to have a system, to keep records, and to dot our i's and cross our t's. However, the level of detail involved may not always be a useful contribution. We may be able to look with pride at our wonderful database, or filing system, or whatever, without having any idea how it will contribute to our desired results. Any system that takes time needs to be pegged to the results it is intended to serve.

Both clients and coaches can analyze (but not over analyze - here we go again!) how any particular activity contributes to results. Results can be measured in terms of contacts, sales, clients, whatever it is that you hope to increase. Certain activities contribute to quality of life, and these are not expected to contribute to results. If activities are not a part of quality of life, and do not contribute to results, consider what need they are serving, and whether it is desirable to continue them.
