Coaching Tip: If I could just know...

Introduction

For many people, a major cause of anxiety is not knowing.

The Coaching Tip

Unfortunately (or not), not knowing is a normal part of life. At the extreme, we do not usually know when or how we will die, and few of us worry about that. Yet many of us most certainly worry about many far less momentous events about which we crave certainty.

In most cases a coach can help to reduce this level of worry in at least two ways. First, the client can be helped to see that the sky will not fall if they do not know when something will occur, or if it will occur. Second, to make this easier, it may help to develop contingency plans for if the event happens or does not happen. Or for if the event happens this year or if it happens next year.

Once we know that we are prepared either way, much of the anxiety is likely to fade.
