Coaching Tip: It's Okay to Toot Your Own Horn

Introduction

People who have been raised to believe that they should not 'toot their own horn' often find it difficult to introduce themselves or their work proudly. While it is fine to give credit to others who have helped us, or have contributed to our success, giving credit where credit is due includes ourselves.

The Coaching Tip

A coach can help a client to realize not only that s/he is capable, perhaps even brilliant, but also that there is nothing wrong with saying so.

If a client really feels that doing this sounds arrogant or conceited, one useful form of 'homework' assignment can be to write ten different statements of competence that s/he would not consider arrogant if spoken by someone else but that also apply to the client, and to practice saying them proudly. After all, if it would be acceptable for someone else to say, then it is acceptable for the client!
