Coaching Tip: Whose responsibility?

Introduction

It is very useful to know what a client thinks is the source of what happens to him/her.

The Coaching Tip

Some people believe that whatever happens to them is the result of luck. Others that they are at the receiving end of what is handed out by other people. Most successful people believe that they are responsible, for and largely in control of, their lives.

Clearly the focus of the initial coaching will differ depending upon which view the client has. However, because most coaches subscribe quite strongly to the latter view, it is sometimes forgotten that a client may not. There is a vast amount of literature in this field, called "attribution theory." What is important is that as coaches we listen for the client's attributions, and conduct our coaching accordingly.

As our clients become empowered through the coaching relationship, they will eventually begin to accept responsibility, and therefore take control, of their lives.
