Coaching Tip: ON-Topic Coaching Calls

Introduction
Keeping a coaching call on topic can be an art in itself.
The Coaching Tip
There can be a fine line, in some client calls, between allowing the client to take the lead in topics, and allowing the call to become unfocused and of little use. It can even happen that a client who demonstrates great need to talk about certain issues is actually (sometimes unconsciously) using those issues to avoid getting to other topics that will require making difficult decisions or taking action on those decisions.A pre-call focus sheet or questionnaire can be extremely helpful. There are many variations, and most coaches are aware of them in one form or another, but not all have experienced the sudden increase in focus for both client and coach when clients can be persuaded to use them, and to e-mail them to the coach in advance of the call. Perhaps simplest is what I call "the six questions," which originated with CoachU. 1. What have I accomplished in the week? 2. What didn't I get done that I intended to do? 3. What are the problems and challenges I'm facing? 4. What are the opportunities available to me right now? 5. What do I want to use this coaching call for? 6. What are my commitments for the upcoming week? Most coaches will find that if a client answers these questions, or some variation thereof, prior to each coaching call, then calls will become more directly related to the client's goals and dreams, and progress toward them will be faster and more focused.
