Coaching Tip: Earning Respect

Introduction
When coaching clients work on the Coach University Need-Less program, many find that a major need is to be respected. This is an area that seems tailor-made for coaching.
The Coaching Tip
Few people can keep the respect of others if they don't respect themselves. Dorothy and her friends had tremendous respect for the Wizard of Oz for a while, but it did not last once they found he was a frightened little man frantically manipulating levers behind a curtain so as to achieve his 'magic' effects. People who try to manipulate externals still know the truth about themselves, and know that their truth will eventually be discovered by others. At the other extreme is the person whose inner life is deserving of respect but is kept so deeply within that it is not noticed. Others can only respect us for what they know, see, or hear. They cannot respect us for our goals, our thoughts, or for the parts of ourselves that we keep hidden. Nor, unless extremely gullible, are they likely to respect us based only on our words and what we say we will do. Sooner or later they will expect to see behavior, or results, that indicate we know how to "walk the walk," as well as "talk the talk." One way we can help our clients to gain more respect from their peers is for them to work on their Personal Foundation so as to truly manifest their own authenticity. Another is to work with them on their self-presentation skills so that they may become assertive enough that their positive attributes are noticed (without being egotistical about it).
