Coaching Tip: Spiritual coaching: Part III – Some varieties of spiritual journaling

Introduction
Journaling can bring into consciousness thoughts and awareness that may otherwise remain murky or completely hidden. In spirituality work there are many, many forms of written exploration. Here are three that are relatively simple for clients to practice, though they may not be accomplished quickly. Some are ongoing.
The Coaching Tip
Journal on spirituality thoughts and experiences, day to day and particularly immediately after meditation. For people who pray to a specific Deity, write a prayer dialog on an ongoing basis. (An example is that of Andrew M . Greeley’s ‘I hope you’re listening, God’ which can be found in many public libraries in the US. Write one’s ‘spiritual autobiography,’ tracing back to early childhood experiences and understandings (or misunderstandings!) and following through the course of one’s spiritual explorations and influences, up to the present day. Encourage the client to examine the threads and cycles and see how they have led to where s/he is now, and where future growth may lie. (Part I – During the call. Part II – Out-of-call activities. Part III – Some of the many varieties of spiritual journaling)
These Spirituality Coaching tips do NOT presume to take the place of religious guidance and direction that may be given in the context of organized religion. They recognize that some clients seek a spiritual component to their coaching separate from any specific religious activity.
