Coaching Tip: When It's Time to Move On…

Introduction

What can a coach do when a client is clearly ready to move on, either to another coach or because a specific issue or project has been resolved, and yet the client seems reluctant to make the move?

The Coaching Tip

Clearly an important part of coaching is to keep the client empowered and to discourage any tendency to dependence, so for the most part such a parting of the ways should not be difficult. However, if the client/coach relationship has been long-term, the client may not be able to envisage doing without some specific aspect of the services that the coach has been providing. Yet, when the time is right, the coach has a responsibility to encourage forward movement.

One of many ways to handle this is to isolate that specific aspect of service that the client particularly treasures, and offer to provide it – and it alone - only if absolutely needed, for a renegotiated fee. In most cases this will ease the client's mind and make the change less threatening. Equally, for the most part, the client will discover that s/he can manage perfectly well without that service once the change has been made.
